The gorge was formed by volcanic activity connected with Mount Aso, where pyroclastic flows cooled and created tall columnar basalt cliffs along the Gokase River.
The highlight is Manai Falls, a beautiful waterfall that drops about 17 meters into the narrow gorge below.
Visitors can enjoy the scenery from a riverside walking path, while rental boats offer a close-up view of the cliffs and waterfall when boat service is operating.
The area is especially scenic in fresh green seasons and autumn, and it is often included in a full Takachiho itinerary with Takachiho Shrine, Amano Iwato Shrine, and Amano Yasukawara.
