DESCRIPTION
Amano Iwato Shrine is one of the most important mythological sites in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture.
The shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu, the sun goddess in Japanese mythology, and is associated with the story of the Heavenly Rock Cave where Amaterasu is said to have hidden herself.
The shrine area includes Nishihongu and Higashihongu, located around the Iwato River, with a peaceful forested atmosphere that feels very different from busier sightseeing spots.
Visitors can also walk to Amano Yasukawara, a riverside cave where, according to legend, the gods gathered to discuss how to bring Amaterasu back from the cave.
The path to Amano Yasukawara follows the river through a quiet valley, and the cave is known for countless small stone piles left by visitors.
