DESCRIPTION
Kumamoto Castle was originally built in the early 17th century by the famous feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa and is widely regarded as one of Japan's greatest castles.
The castle is especially famous for its impressive black exterior, massive stone walls, defensive design, and elegant castle keep.
Throughout its history, Kumamoto Castle played an important role during the Edo Period and later during the Satsuma Rebellion in the late nineteenth century.
In 2016, the Kumamoto Earthquake caused significant damage to many structures within the castle complex. Since then, extensive restoration work has been carried out while preserving the castle's historical authenticity.
Visitors can now enter the restored main keep, where modern exhibitions explain the history of the castle, the samurai era, and the ongoing restoration process.
The castle grounds also feature beautiful gardens, defensive gates, watchtowers, and seasonal scenery. During spring, hundreds of cherry trees bloom, making Kumamoto Castle one of Kyushu's most popular cherry blossom viewing locations.

From JR Kumamoto Station, take the Kumamoto City Tram to Kumamoto Castle / City Hall Stop. The castle is about a 10-minute walk from the tram stop.
