SUMMARY
Hokkaido Shrine is the most important Shinto shrine in Hokkaido and one of Sapporo's most popular cultural attractions. Surrounded by a peaceful forest within Maruyama Park, the shrine offers visitors a tranquil atmosphere and an opportunity to experience Japanese traditions and spirituality.

DESCRIPTION

Hokkaido Shrine was established in 1869 shortly after the development of Hokkaido began during the Meiji Era. The shrine was built to enshrine deities responsible for protecting and guiding the development of Hokkaido.

Today, Hokkaido Shrine is one of the most significant spiritual sites in northern Japan and attracts millions of visitors every year. Many people visit the shrine to pray for good fortune, health, success, and safe travels.

The shrine grounds are surrounded by hundreds of cherry trees and plum trees, making it one of the most popular cherry blossom viewing spots in Sapporo during spring. In autumn, colorful foliage creates a beautiful setting for a peaceful stroll.

Visitors can experience traditional Japanese customs such as purchasing omamori (lucky charms), drawing omikuji (fortune slips), and participating in seasonal festivals held throughout the year.

Located next to Maruyama Park and Maruyama Zoo, Hokkaido Shrine is often included as part of a full-day sightseeing itinerary in western Sapporo.
