Shuri Castle Main Hall Reconstruction Approaches Final Stage

Reconstruction of Shuri Castle's Seiden main hall is progressing toward its scheduled completion in autumn 2026. Shurijo Castle Park remains partly open, allowing visitors to learn about the restoration while work continues.

Reconstruction of the Seiden main hall at Shuri Castle in Naha, Okinawa, is moving through its final stages, with completion targeted for autumn 2026.

The Seiden and several surrounding buildings were destroyed by fire on October 31, 2019. Reconstruction work has used historical records, photographs, traditional craftsmanship and modern fire-prevention measures to restore the symbol of the former Ryukyu Kingdom.

The main hall's exterior had largely regained its distinctive red appearance by 2025. Interior decoration, lacquer work, fittings and other detailed restoration activities have continued during 2026.

Shurijo Castle Park is not completely closed. Gates, stone walls, viewpoints, exhibitions and other areas remain accessible according to the park's current operating arrangements. Visitors can also learn about the reconstruction process, although routes and viewing areas may change as work progresses.

Autumn 2026 is a scheduled completion target rather than a guaranteed public opening date. Travellers should check the official Shurijo Castle Park website for construction updates, accessible areas, opening hours and any weather-related closures before visiting.
